Can cryogenic deflashing remove flash, burrs and gates?

Cryogenic deflashing is generally best for thin flash that embrittles before the part body. Thick gates, ductile connections and features near functional surfaces need separate validation and cannot always be solved by increasing blast intensity.

Thin flash and thick gates are different problems

Thin flash has a high surface-area-to-volume ratio and often embrittles faster than the part. Thick gates and reinforced connections may remain tougher and require another process or pre-treatment.

Judge feasibility from the root geometry

Root thickness, parting-line position and acceptable residual height determine difficulty. Sample tests should inspect residue, surface, dimensions and downstream assembly effects.

  • Mark flash and gate locations
  • Measure root thickness
  • Define residual and surface acceptance criteria
