How are moulded plastic parts cryogenically deflashed?

Suitability depends on the polymer, flash location and the low-temperature toughness of the part. Cryogenic media can remove thin embrittled flash, while nylon or PA media are more commonly used for ambient blast deburring.

Separate cryogenic and ambient processes

When flash embrittles before the part body, liquid-nitrogen deflashing may work. Thermosets, glass-filled plastics and some alloy components may instead suit ambient nylon-media blasting.

Evaluate gates separately

Thick gates fracture differently from thin flash. Increasing media size or blast intensity is not always the answer. Confirm the gate geometry, acceptable residual height and surface requirements.

  • Confirm low-temperature material toughness
  • Separate thin flash from thick gates
  • Compare surface changes with sample tests
