How should cryogenic deflashing media be selected?

Select media by considering the part material, flash thickness, equipment temperature, blast intensity and required surface finish. Confirm the process first, then narrow the test range by size, shape and wear performance.

Start with the part and process

Rubber seals, precision mouldings and die-cast parts have different flash structures and need different impact levels. For liquid-nitrogen deflashing, confirm the part can tolerate the low-temperature cycle before selecting media strength.

  • Part material and body hardness
  • Location of flash, burrs or gates
  • Machine temperature, load and target cycle time

Compare size and shape

Smaller media can reach fine features, while larger media generally deliver more impact per particle. Cylindrical and cubic shapes create different contact patterns, so sample testing remains important.

How to start a sample test

Prepare part photos, material, machine model, current media and target result. Compare two or three adjacent sizes and record cycle time, surface condition, media consumption and repeatability.
